National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages, which is now in its 19th year!
2012 Theme: Our World in Motion
The theme has been chosen this year to broadly encompass many aspects of science and engineering under one banner, and we hope it can be interpreted in many different ways at your events and activities. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
- Our world and its surroundings: the movement of our planet’s surface, weather and it’s position in space and time
- Travelling around our world: from birds to planes and fish to submarines. How things travel around our world and how we, as humans, have used technology to make fantastic journeys an every-day reality.
- Our biological world: from plants tracking the motion of the sun to the red blood cells that surge around our bodies, how movement is essential to every living thing
- Ready, get set, go!: from 100m sprint at the Olympics to racing cars and global yachting, how we strive to always go faster
- Our tiny world: even the tiniest molecules and particles vibrate and spin. Our fascinating universe is driven by the smallest particles moving at all sorts of speeds.
- Society in motion: from stock markets to mobile communication, human interactions make the world go round.

NSEW themes are intended to provide a foundation for your own events and activities, but it is not intended to be the only theme seen during NSEW 2012. If you can’t think of an event or activity around the theme then don’t worry, you can cover whatever you like in your event!
Previous themes like ‘Earth’, ‘change’ and ‘communication’ have sparked a wide variety of different events across the UK during NSEW. We hope that ”our world in motion” might do the same for 2012!
If you have any burning ideas that you’re keen to share then let us know.
