Eric Albone

Eric Albone (Deputy Chair, formerly Chair 2003-2011)

My background is in scientific research (Oxford doctorate in Chemistry, research career in the US and later in Bristol) which took me into interdisciplinary areas of environmental chemistry and chemical ecology. I authored one of first books from a chemical perspective on mammalian chemical communication- “Mammalian Semiochemistry” Wiley Interscience, 1984.

Subsequently I taught at Clifton College for 17 years and during that time set up a registered charity Clifton Scientific Trust (charity 1086933) to develop innovative strategies enabling young people of all ages and abilities to experience at first hand the excitement and challenge of scientific exploration and application. I now devote myself full time to Clifton Scientific Trust, which is independent of Clifton College and works almost entirely with state schools- in Bristol currently with inner city primary schools through our Meet-a-Medic programme and internationally with post-16 school and college students through our UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop Programme, most recently (2011) hosted at Cambridge University and Kyoto University.

I have been involved with the British Science Association since 1986 when the Annual Festival last came to Bristol and I was the Local Secretary for Chemistry. Since then have been continuously involved with the Association, including as Member of Council, Recorder for Chemistry and Chair of our Branch. I am also member of RSC and ASE and hold the 1993 Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Chemical Education for this work and the Japan Society Award for 2007 for our work with UK-Japan Young Scientists. Clifton Scientific Trust is also a member of STEMNET and of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, the meetings of which I frequently attend.
