The Committee

The Branch Committee meets Quarterly to broadly plan the activities that we will support in the coming months. It is also a forum for making formal decisions associated with Branch governance.

Following the 2011 AGM, the Officers below have been elected:

Chair John Bradford John’s first degree was in Mechanical Engineering and his PhD examined systemic change in small engineering businesses. He was until recently the manager for Science City Bristol and has spent over 10 years building partnerships between academia and industry. He is currently working for the Aerospace & Advanced Engineering iNET at the University of the West of England, Bristol.He is a Panel Advisor to the University of Local Knowledge (Knowle West Media Centre), a reviewer for the Festival of Ideas, a contributor to NEXUS (University of Bristol’s leadership initiative on improving outcomes for young people), and an Elected Member (Branches) of the General Committee for the British Science Association. chair@bscia-bsba.org.uk
Deputy-Chair Eric Albone Eric Albone is co-founder and Director of Clifton Scientific Trust. He taught science at Clifton College, Bristol, for 17 years, where he was responsible for the first school-based Scientist in Residence scheme. Before that he followed a research career in the USA and the UK where his special interest was in mammalian chemical communication; his DPhil is in chemistry.He holds honorary research affiliations in the School of Chemistry and the Institute of Learning and Research Technology at Bristol University.He is an Association for Science Education representative on the committee of the Royal Society – ESSO Science – Education Partnership Scheme and a member of Council/Chemistry Record of the British Association. He received the Royal Society of Chemistry Award for Chemical Education in 1993 and in 1997 a Royal Society and British Association Millennium Award.

Programme Secretary Emma Trantham Emma graduated from Bristol Vet School in 2009 but after a short time in practice playing with a variety of animals, large and small, she decided to go back to university and has just started a PhD. Her main interest is in the transmission of diseases between people and animals and she hopes to pursue this topic over her career (although she is now starting to get a little concerned about the number of poo samples her work seems to involve!) events@bscia-bsba.org.uk
Reporting Officer Hayley Birch Hayley has been working as a freelance writer and editor for over four years now. Her articles have appeared in Nature, New Scientist, Chemistry World, Nature Biotechnology, Focus, Science for Environment Policy and the Telegraph and she has contributed to and edited several popular science books, including Defining Moments in Science.Hayley completed her first degree, in biology, at the University of Warwick.In 2006, she was awarded a bursary to study science communication at master’s level by the Association of British Science Writers.
